Thinking of having an activity holiday? Just about every one of us would define this in a different way; some people look upon walking, golfing or tennis holidays as exciting possibilities, but then other people may well consider these to be one big yawn. We all have our own attitudes and activity holidays can vary between the gentlest of pursuits and high octane dangerous sports suitable only for adrenalin junkies! Mass air travel and the popularity of countries like New Zealand where outdoor sports are a normal way of life have opened up many different choices for those of us who seek something different, whether it is a gentle amble through beautiful scenery or a death defying bungee jump! We have put together a few suggestions below, which will hopefully provide a few ideas for people at both ends of the adrenalin spectrum, as well as all those in between.
Have you tried surfing? The ultimate surf destination may well be the beaches around the southeast of Queensland in Australia, where the surf is heavy, the weather is almost invariably hot and the atmosphere is completely laid-back and friendly. Prefer cold weather rather than hot? Head for the Scottish or European ski resorts and in most regions you will find slopes suitable for everyone from beginner to expert as well as the all important apres ski! Prefer walking? There are many walks in the world which take you not only through beautiful countryside but also through forests, jungles and mountains too. If you go across to Africa you will find accompanied walks with trained and experienced guides where you can see wild animals such as elephants, leopards, cheetahs etc in their natural environment. Or why not head for Peru and follow the Inca Trail to the magical city of Machu Picchu? It will take you several days of trekking and you can stay overnight at specially prepared lodges; you can carry your own equipment or the guides will arrange for it to be carried for you. Is this a little too strenuous? Then why not have a biking holiday in an easy flat country like Holland, or a hilly region like Tuscany, where you can have a more challenging experience, as well as a wonderful choice of local food and wines! Perhaps you prefer to be in the water however in which case snorkelling over the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia or at Sharm-El-Sheikh in Egypt can be an exhilarating experience as you get up close and personal to some of the most spectacular coral formations and exotic fish in the world. Want to be more adventurous still? Try scuba diving. If you have never tried it before there are lots of diving schools all around the world who will take you as a complete novice, teach you how to use scuba equipment safely, and escort you on dives in the open sea or lakes. There are few experiences more unforgettable than sitting 10 m underwater on a coral reef feeding fish out of your hand!
Perhaps you are even more adventurously minded than all this. Would you like to run with the bulls in Pamplona in Spain? Dodge under the rearing horses at the Saint Joan festival in Minorca? Both are very exciting spectacles to watch but if you take part you have to be prepared to accept the fact that there is a risk of injury or even, occasionally death so these are not for the fainthearted. Neither are such lunatic but highly popular activities like skydiving, bungee jumping, Kite surfing, or white water rafting, all of which you can find in the outdoor sports paradise of New Zealand as well as at innumerable sites worldwide.
Hopefully we have given you a few new ideas for your next adventure holiday; there is a huge choice of holidays at Internet prices in the directory to the left for you to browse through where you could find even more ideas. Have fun!
