Health Supplements


Health supplements can dramatically improve your mood, appearance, and overall health. There are many available, so you should research the options, though a few of the most important are multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium, and Omega-3 fatty acids.

Multivitamin

A good multivitamin is the foundation of any health supplements regime. There are a myriad available, many targeted toward specific subsection of the population men, women, over age 65, under age 18, and so on. Choose the best for you and take it consistently.

Vitamin D

When exposed to the sun, our skin naturally produces Vitamin D, but if you don't see regular sunshine, your body may not be producing the necessary amounts. Vitamin D both lifts your mood and improves your skin, especially in those with psoriasis. It's necessary for the absorption of calcium and recent research suggests it may inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells. Other research has found that those with the top 25% of Vitamin D levels have significant reduction in mortality rates as compared to those in the bottom 25%. Given the widespread vitamin D deficiencies, it's a good idea to take a supplement.

Calcium

At age 35, people begin to lose between .3% and .5% of bone density per annum, a natural consequence of aging. It can eventually lead to osteoporosis, a disease characterised by frail, porous bones and one that leads to painful fractures and that hunched look of the elderly. Calcium supplementation is essential, far before your retirement years.

Drinking milk is not a sufficient source of calcium. The process by which milk producers kill bacteria negates the effectiveness of the calcium content. Calcium carbonate is the cheapest form of calcium to produce, so it's often added to foods. It's alkaline-based, however, so it can be more difficult to digest, unlike calcium citrate, which is acid-based. The most important thing to note is the elemental calcium level that's the real level of calcium your body will absorb. Calcium gluconate and calcium and lactate have very low levels, so they're not ideal choices.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The modern diet is high in Omega-6 essential fatty acids and low in Omega-3s. The latter are essential for health, but are not produced by our bodies, so they must be consumed. Omega-3s help people lose weight, improve skin conditions like psoriasis and acne, and elevate mood, among many other benefits. They are found especially in fish, but also in nuts, flax seed, and chia seed. Supplements are a good way to make sure you get an adequate amount.
