When I was a young man a holiday abroad almost inevitably meant a ferry trip across to France or, for those who had a little extra money, a rail journey from France to Germany or Switzerland was a possibility. Going on a cruise to the Mediterranean in those days was only a dream for most of us, and affordable by only the very rich and the only way that most people would ever see foreign parts was by joining the Armed Forces and being posted abroad. Cheap air travel changed all that! All of a sudden a week in Benidorm, Ibiza or the Algarve was cheaper than a week in Blackpool, and with guaranteed sunshine too! Nowadays that cruise is within the financial reach of most people, and many of us may even look forward to a world cruise at least once in our lives. Whether our tastes run to the classical architecture of Rome or the sunny beaches of the Seychelles one or two foreign holidays a year are a realistic prospect for nearly all of us.
