Lighting

Lighting is something every home needs, but there are many ways to provide it. Each method of providing light has different benefits and drawbacks, as well as giving different effects. Here are some popular types of lighting and a bit about them.

Lamps are likely the most common means of providing light. Many of these use some sort of stand to hold the actual fixture, and can be easily moved.

Floor lamps have a long stand and are often placed in corners or next to chairs. These lamps are great for reading, due to the fact that their light bulbs are usually positioned above a person who is sitting next to them. In corners, they can get rid of dark spots in the room. Even though they can be moved, they are usually left in the same position for the duration.

Table lamps use a stand and are, as the name suggests, placed on tables. These can light up what’s on the table well, but make for generally poor reading lamps due to the fact that they are usually too low. Often, dim bulbs are used for these, but if the light is too subdued, it can render a table lamp fairly useless.

Desk lamps are a specialized form of stand-based lighting. The stand of a desk lamp typically has a curve, so as to allow papers or other work to be slid underneath the bulb’s lighting area. They are of a height specifically chosen to allow a person sitting at a desk to work or read without trouble.

Wall fixtures are another form of lighting. These provide great ambient light, but are not too useful for lighting up particular things. The exception to that is a spotlight. A spotlight directs its light in a concentrated manner, and is great for highlighting a particular area or item. These can be mounted high on the wall to provide “spillover” ambient light as well as a bright spot, or mounted low so as to only hit one place.

For proper lighting, a house or flat will need several types of fixtures, each selected for the purpose it is going to serve and the effect desired. Since there are almost unlimited designs amongst the different varieties of light fixtures, there should be no trouble matching the overall decor of a room, no matter what fixture type you prefer.
